How to change your turn signals into foglightsSaturday, January 21, 2006 10:15 PM EST by Natcc99

natcc99 has written a very nice "How To" article on how to convert your turn signals into useful foglights. He takes the old school method of leaving your turn signals permanently on and goes one step further. This was done on a 5th generation Honda Prelude, but can definitely be applied to all other types of vehicles. We do recommend that you add some sort of turn signals as this modification will get rid of your stock ones. Enjoy!
Ok - I'm sure many of you know about the "bumper light -to- foglight conversion" where we can convert our botton turn signals to constantly stay on - thus, turning them into foglights. I did this back in the days with my Accord. At first, I used regular turn-signal bulbs and notice the light output was useless.
I then installed high beam bulbs into the bumper lights. YES, highbeam bulbs! And they were bright as hell. Unfortunately, the beam pattern was horrible and blinded incoming traffic. The only use I got out of them was spotting potholes in advance.
Here are pics of my old RIP Accord
I decided to the do the same with the Prelude but improve the idea. My plan was to install some real driving lights inside the turn signals. That way I can be sure that the beam pattern will be correct. I bought some CATZ fogs off Ebay. YES, I know they are bling bling gold, but no one will see the color where I'm installing them.
To make a long story short, the winter season came and I never got the chance to install them where I wanted to. So, I temporarily placed them in the center grill. I made some custom brakets and hung them as far back as I could to "hide" them when the lights were off. If you are standing in front of the car, you can't see them unless you get down on your knees. The lights were so far back that the back of the lights almost hit the radiator.
I guess you could say I mounted them in the traditional location with a twist. When the winter storms ended, it gave me a chance to install the lights where I wanted them to....which was in the turn signal location. To keep the stock clean look, I decided to place the CATZ lights BEHIND the turn signals.
Step 1: I cut out the turn signals, just large enough for the CATZ lights to peak through.
Step 2: After careful measurements, I mounted the CATZ lights onto the car. It was a little tricky, but nothing that couldn't be done with a few trail and errors.
Done!
Now I have the "bumper light conversion" but was able to preserve the correct beam pattern of driving lights. Yes, the clear plastic lens of the bumper lights has changed the beam pattern, but not by much. To keep things legal, my front turn signals have been relocated to the center grill. They have been stealthly tinted.
