All of us pay taxes in some way shape or form. An article at CullmanTimes.com talks about an alleged tax on hybrid vehicles. The article goes on to say that Alabama state officials deny any sort of thing.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, approximately 20 percent of the cost every gallon of gas is accounted for in taxes, some 44 cents per gallon.
Some lawmakers are really scared by the mileage a hybrid can get and the growing popularity in states such as California. The article states that CNN reported that lawmakers in California have considered a "tax by mile" program where you get taxed for the number of miles you drive and not for the number of gallons of gasoline you buy. What the hell? To me that makes no sense at all. An H2 and a Prius drive 50 miles, but the H2 uses 10 gallons of gas and the Prius only sips on 1 and you're telling me they should get taxed the same? That makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. Guzzling 10 gallons of gas an probably polluting the environment 10 times as much and you pay the same amount in taxes? Far from logical if you ask me.
I think hybrids are going to be the new thing of the future. 50% of drivers on the road probably could care less if their car has 150 horsepower as opposed to 200 horsepower. Why wouldn't they want a hybrid that saves them a great chunk of change on gas? Granted, this is for your average commuter ... not your go-fast automobile enthusiast. Once the price of hybrids and regular gasoline engines become level I guarantee there will be a huge surge in hybrid purchases and we'll be seeing them everywhere. I already see a Prius at every stop light in the Bay Area. Every soccer mom in the world will be driving a hybrid. It's only a matter of time.
I guess tax dollars must come from somewhere and if not enough is coming from gas, then it will surely have to come from somewhere else. I dunno about mileage tho.
