What is the Difference Between Turbochargers and Superchargers?

So what's all the buzz about turbos and superchargers? Well both of these engine components are classified as forced induction systems. They both force air into your the cylinders of your engine. Why would you want this? More air means you can add more fuel for a bigger explosion creating more of what we all crave, power. With that little mechanical engineering lesson out of the way the rest is pretty easy.

The main difference between these two is the source of their power. A supercharger is connected to the engine's drivetrain using a belt. The engine turns the belt that drives the supercharger and the supercharger forces more air into the engine. Now a turbocharger gets its power from the exhaust of the engine. The turbo then forces more air back into the engine using a turbine. There are many advantages and disadvantages to both types of systems. Turbochargers should, theoretically, be more efficient because they use the exhaust pressure as a source of power, but it can take some time for the turbo to reach it's peak power output because at lower rpms the turbine won't be spinning as fast. This is commonly referred to as "turbo lag". Superchargers are much easier to install, but often more expensive.

wouldnt a supercharger be better? because it sounds like the air would be better to use than in a turbo cuz in a turbo the air is being taken back in after being used
